Biography

Dr. Chan earned his B.S. Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. Organic Chemistry (2010) from MIT. After doing a postdoc at UC Berkeley (2010-2012), he joined IBM—Almaden as a scientist. His IBM stint (2012-2015) resulted in 5 U.S. patents, 19 publications, and 2 innovation awards.

From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa, where he led a research group of students and postdocs, raised $1.11 M USD in funding, and won the 2019 Early Researcher Award. Dr. Chan has been an external grant evaluator for Canada (NSERC), Saudi Arabia (KAUST CRG), Germany (DFG), and Singapore (A*STAR YIRG).

In 2021, Dr. Chan returned to Singapore and joined A*STAR. He is a Scientist (P.I.) and Team Leader in the Sustainable Polymers Division at ISCE2. He was awarded the CDF and CRF grants in 2021 and 2022 respectively, totalling $621K USD.
