Biography
Julian Chan, PhD CChem FRSC
Dr. Chan earned his B.S. Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. Organic Chemistry (2010) from MIT. After doing a postdoc at UC Berkeley (2010-2012), he joined IBM—Almaden as a scientist. His 2.5-year stint at IBM resulted in 5 U.S. patents, 19 publications, and 2 IBM invention awards.
From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa, where he led an independent research group, raised US$1.1 M in funding, and won the 2019 Early Researcher Award. Dr. Chan has been an invited grant evaluator for several countries (Canada, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Singapore).
In 2021, Dr. Chan joined A*STAR in Singapore. Aside from leading a research team as P.I., he was concurrently a Manager in the Strategy & Development Division, and also an A*STAR Research Integrity Adviser from 2022-2024. In 2025, Dr. Chan was awarded Chartered Chemist (CChem) status and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
