Biography
Dr. Chan earned his B.S. Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. Organic Chemistry (2010) from MIT. After doing a postdoc at UC Berkeley (2010-2012), he joined IBM—Almaden as a scientist. His 2.5-year stint at IBM resulted in 5 U.S. patents, 19 publications, and 2 IBM invention awards.
From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa, where he led an independent research group, raised US$1.1 M in funding, and won the 2019 Early Researcher Award. Dr. Chan has been an invited as a grant evaluator by several countries (Canada, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Singapore).
In 2021, Dr. Chan joined A*STAR in Singapore. He is a Principal Investigator and was awarded both the CDF and CRF grants, totalling US$621K. Aside from leading a research team, he was concurrently a Manager in the Strategy and Development Division. He was also an A*STAR Research Integrity Advisor from 2022-2024 and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) since 2025.
