Julian Chan, PhD CSci CChem FRSC

Dr. Chan earned his B.S. Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and PhD in Organic Chemistry (2010) from MIT, where he was an MIT-DuPont Presidential Fellow. After a 2-year postdoc at UC Berkeley, he moved to Silicon Valley to take up a scientist role at IBM—Almaden, where he secured 5 U.S. patents, published 19 papers, and won 2 IBM awards.

From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he led a research group, secured competitive grants, and taught Organic Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry. For his research on organic materials, Dr. Chan won the Ontario Early Researcher Award in 2019.

In 2021, Dr. Chan joined A*STAR in Singapore. Aside from his main role as P.I. and Group Leader, he was also the institute’s Research Integrity Adviser (2022-2024) and a manager in the Strategy & Development Division.

After 10 years as a research leader, Dr. Chan now manages an international, multi-institutional decarbonization research program. There, he coordinates efforts across academia, government, and global partners (e.g., Berkeley, Cambridge) to drive high-impact science, while also evaluating new proposals from local PIs.

In 2025, Dr. Chan was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and awarded Chartered Chemist (CChem) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) designations shortly after.
